Meet Christine: Through Education, Sisterhood & Community Training, Christine & The Golden Eagles are Soaring Beyond Barriers

Christine was fourteen when Kenya Works first connected with her community in western Kenya. Her school fees had fallen behind. Her family was struggling. The path most likely ahead of her — the one her community had mapped out for generations — was early marriage.

That path changed.

The Golden Eagles

Christine is part of a peer support group Kenya Works helped form — young women who call themselves the Golden Eagles. The name was their own choice. They picked it because eagles soar above obstacles, and that’s what they intend to do.

Through Kenya Works’ Education Works program, Christine’s school fees are now covered. Through Community Works training sessions, she and the other Golden Eagles have learned about their rights — the right to an education, the right to choose their own futures, the right to say no.

What Christine Says

“Before, I didn’t know I had choices. Now I know I do. I’m going to finish school. I want to study health. I want to come back and help girls like me.”

Christine is now in her third year of secondary school. Her grades are strong. Her confidence is stronger.

The Ripple Effect

The Golden Eagles don’t just meet for themselves. They go back into their communities and talk to other girls, to mothers, to fathers. They share what they’ve learned. They model what’s possible.
