Poverty shapes every part of daily life.

In Kenya, about 40% of people live below the national poverty line. Understanding the depth of that reality is where change begins.

Poverty

Poverty in Kenya is more than a lack of income — it affects access to food, education, health care, clean water, safe housing, and stable work. In 2022, about 40% of people lived below the national poverty line, and 32% were food poor, meaning over 16 million people could not meet the food poverty line threshold.

Poverty is especially severe in rural areas, where families often face lower incomes, fewer jobs, weaker infrastructure, and limited access to services. These conditions make it harder for children to stay in school and for families to recover from shocks such as drought, illness, or rising prices.

Women and girls are often hit hardest. They are more likely to carry unpaid care responsibilities, have fewer economic opportunities, and face greater vulnerability when households are under stress. Poverty is not only about survival; it shapes whether children can learn, whether caregivers can work, and whether families can build long-term stability.

Kenya Works Response

Kenya Works helps children and families overcome poverty through education, practical support, and community partnership. By removing barriers to learning and strengthening family stability, we support long-term change that benefits entire communities.

Poverty is not just a lack of money. It is a lack of options — for what to eat, where to sleep, whether to send your child to school today.
